Nasa picks deep-space astronaut ship

2011-May-25, 08:39

Nasa has confirmed that the vehicle it will use to send astronauts to places like asteroids will be based on its Orion capsule concept. cheap nike shoes store Orion was the ship being built to return America to the Moon before the project was cancelled last year by President Barack Obama. The US space agency says the financial investment and the engineering lessons learned should not be wasted. It wants the new Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle to benefit from that heritage. Mr Obama has said he would like humans to visit a space rock in the 2020s. The MPCV would be the ship that takes them there. It would also have a role in any human mission to Mars - the destination Nasa is aiming to reach in perhaps the 2030s.Coach Sunglasses Orion vehicle Orion was conceived as a high-spec vehicle that could visit the ISS and do deep-space destinations Lockheed Martin was the American company leading the development of Orion. It will keep the prime contractor role on the new ship. "We are committed to human exploration beyond low-Earth orbit and look forward to developing the next generation of systems to take us there," said Nasa Administrator Charles Bolden in a statement. The MPCV will be capable of carrying four astronauts on 21-day missions. It would start those journeys by launching on the top of an as-yet-undefined big rocket and end them by splashing down in the Pacific off California. Women Nike Dunk Low Nasa says the 23-ton spacecraft would have a pressurized volume of 19.5 cubic metres (690 cu ft), just over nine cubic metres (300 cu ft) of which would be habitable. On missions longer than 21 days, the MPCV would be attached to other modules. "During these missions to asteroids or Mars, or to the moons of Mars, this vehicle would be just maintained in more dormant mode while the crew would be in another volume which would have longer-term consumables and capability to support them," explained Doug Cooke, associate administrator for the agency's Exploration Systems Mission Directorate in Washington. "In terms of deep space exploration, we hope to have test flights obviously in this decade. We're not exactly sure when, but certainly as early as possible. Those would be missions beyond low-Earth orbit." Coach Boots The US Congress, through the Nasa Authorisation Act 2010, has mandated that this rocket should be launching by the end of 2016, although the agency has previously stated that it views this timeline as challenging. It promises more details on the launcher "in the coming weeks". Nasa's current fleet of space vehicles - the shuttles - are being retired, with the Atlantis orbiter set to end their operation for good with a final flight in July. America will then rely on Russian Soyuz vehicles to get its astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) until a new wave of US commercial carriers enter service around the middle of the decade. In the main, these crew carriers will be substantially cheaper to build and operate than the MPCV, and will not be capable of venturing beyond low-Earth orbit where the ISS resides. coac h outlet coac h factory outlet chea p coach handbags outlet coac h handbags outlet repl ica coach outlet

Egyptian pyramids found by infra-red satellite images

2011-May-24, 08:42

Seventeen lost pyramids are among the buildings identified in a new satellite survey of Egypt. coac h outlet More than 1,000 tombs and 3,000 ancient settlements were also revealed by looking at infra-red images which show up underground buildings. Initial excavations have already confirmed some of the findings including of two suspected pyramids. "To excavate a pyramid is the dream of every archaeologist," says Dr Sarah Parcak. She has pioneered the work in space archaeology from a Nasa-sponsored laboratory in Birmingham, Alabama and says she was amazed at how much she and her team have found. "We were very intensely doing this research for over a year. I could see the data as it was emerging, but for me the "A-Ha" moment was when I could step back and look at everything that we'd found and I couldn't believe we could locate so many sites all over Egypt." cheap nike shoes store The team analysed images from satellites orbiting 700km above the earth, equipped with cameras so powerful they can pin-point objects less than 1m in diameter on the earth's surface. Infra-red imaging was used to highlight different materials under the surface. Test excavations Ancient Egyptians built their houses and structures out of mud brick, which is much denser than the soil that surrounds it, so the shapes of houses, temples and tombs can be seen. Coach Jewelrys "It just shows us how easy it is to underestimate both the size and scale of past human settlements," says Dr Parcak. And she believes there are more antiquities to be discovered: "These are just the sites [close to] the surface. There are many thousands of additional sites that the Nile has covered over with silt. This is just the beginning of this kind of work." BBC cameras followed Dr Parcak on her "nervous" journey when she travelled to Egypt to see if excavations could back up what her technology could see under the surface. coac h factory outlet Among other things, the Egyptian authorities plan to use the technology to help protect the country's antiquities in the future. During the recent revolution, looters accessed some well-known archaeological sites. "We can tell from the imagery a tomb was looted from a particular period of time and we can alert Interpol to watch out for antiquities from that time, that may be offered for sale." She also hopes the new technology will help engage young people in science and will be a major help for archaeologists around the world. chea p coach handbags outlet coac h handbags outlet repl ica coach outlet repl ica coach handbags Coach Sunglasses

Sudan Abyei dispute: Gunmen burning and looting - UN

2011-May-23, 09:01

The Sudanese town of Abyei has been set on fire, with gunmen looting property, the United Nations says. chea p coach handbags outlet The town and surrounding area are claimed by both Khartoum and by South Sudan, set to become independent in July. The town was captured at the weekend by northern troops. The UN has urged Sudan's government in Khartoum to withdraw its forces. Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir later said that Khartoum wanted to resolve the issue peacefully. South Sudan's secession follows decades of north-south conflict and some fear this dispute could reignite the war. 'Act of war' Coach Sunglasses Khartoum has said it acted after 22 of its men were killed in a southern ambush last Thursday. The northern troops were travelling in a UN convoy. UN officials have described the incident as "a criminal attack" and the US called on South Sudan to "account" for the assault. South Sudanese forces have denied responsibility for the incident. Since then, both UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and EU top diplomat Catherine Ashton have condemned the violence in the region. coac h handbags outlet Under a 2005 peace agreement, which ended 22 years of civil war, Abyei was granted special status and a joint north-south administration set up in 2008.

Spanish socialists suffer election losses

2011-May-22, 10:00

Spain's governing Socialist party has suffered heavy losses in local and regional elections, early results show.coac h outlet With 91% of municipal votes counted, the centre-right Popular Party (PP) had almost a 10-percentage point lead, the interior ministry said. Voting took place amid mass protests against high unemployment and the government's handling of the economy. Demonstrators holding sit-ins in Madrid and other cities said rallies would continue for another week. Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero conceded his party had been resoundingly defeated but said he had no intention of calling early general elections. Nike outlet He said three years of economic crisis had taken their toll. "It destroyed thousands of jobs. It is a crisis that had profound effects on citizens' morale. I know that many Spaniards suffer great hardship and fear for their futures," he said. "Today, without doubt, they expressed their discontent," he added. However, he vowed to pursue reforms to try to improve the economy until the end of his mandate. At this point, a general election must be held by March of next year. coac h factory outlet Jubilant PP supporters celebrated outside their party headquarters in Madrid as the final votes were counted. The party was also heading to victory in virtually all of the 13 regional government up for grabs. Prime Minister Zapatero's government has been struggling to overcome recession and create jobs. Spain's overall jobless rate soared to 21% in the first quarter of this year, the highest in the industrialised world. Youth unemployment stands at 45%. Protest movement Nike sb shoes Meanwhile, thousands of young protesters remain camped out in squares across the country. What began as a sit-in in Madrid's central Puerta del Sol square a week ago has turned into a national protest movement popularly known as 15-M. About 30,000 people were estimated to have occupied the central Puerta del Sol square in the run-up to the vote. The protests, which have also taken place in cities including Barcelona, Valencia, Seville and Bilbao, have so far been peaceful. Paralysed man can stand and move his legs again

2011-May-19, 09:13

A US man who was paralysed from the chest down after being hit by a car is now able to stand with electrical stimulation of his spinal cord. Coach Boots Rob Summers, from Oregon, said standing on his own was "the most amazing feeling". He can voluntarily move his toes, hips, knees and ankles and also walk on a treadmill while being supported, according to research in the Lancet. However, a UK expert said this should not be interpreted as a cure. Sporting promise Rob was a keen baseball player and in 2006 was part of the team which won the College World Series. Coach Bracelets Within days he was able to stand independently and eventually he could control his legs and step, with assistance, for short periods of time. "None of us believed it," said Professor Reggie Edgerton, from the University of California. "I was afraid to believe it." Rob has also regained other functions such as bladder, bowel and blood pressure control. He said it had been a "long journey of countless hours of training" which had "completely changed my life". Coach Jewelrys He added: "For someone who for four years was unable to even move a toe, to have the freedom and ability to stand on my own is the most amazing feeling." Warning This study has proved that electrical stimulation works in one person. Four more patients are being lined up to further test the treatment. Professor Geoffrey Raisman, from the Institute of Neurology at UCL, said: "This one case is interesting, and from one of the leading groups in the world. To what extent this procedure could in the future provide a further and sustained improvement cannot be judged on the basis of one patient. Coach Earrings For Rob he sees his story as a message of hope to people who are paralysed and as for walking again: "I see it as a major possibility."

Strauss-Kahn arrest: IMF boss faces new bail hearing

2011-May-18, 09:12

International Monetary Fund (IMF) head Dominique Strauss-Kahn will make a new plea for bail at a court hearing on Thursday morning, his lawyer says. coac h outlet Mr Strauss-Kahn, 62, faces a number of charges in the alleged sexual assault of a hotel maid in New York and was denied bail on Monday. Mr Strauss-Kahn, on suicide watch at New York's infamous Rikers Island prison, denies all the charges. The maid, 32, has said she is "scared" but will testify against him. Mr Strauss-Kahn's lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, said the new bail hearing would be in Manhattan on Thursday morning. Nike outlet The IMF chief faces charges of committing a criminal sexual act, attempted rape, sexual abuse, unlawful imprisonment and forcible touching. On Monday a judge in New York denied Mr Strauss-Kahn bail - despite the offer of a $1m (£618,000) guarantee - saying there was a risk the IMF chief would flee the country. France and the US have no extradition agreement. The BBC's Laura Trevelyan in New York says the defence will offer a new package that they hope will convince the judge that Mr Strauss-Kahn will not try to flee while he prepares his defence. coac h factory outlet That could include Mr Strauss-Kahn offering to wear an electronic ankle tag, surrendering his passport and living under very restrictive conditions, our correspondent says. 'Scared and incredulous' Earlier on Wednesday the maid's lawyer, Jeffrey Shapiro, said that his client feared for herself and her daughter when she discovered Mr Strauss-Kahn's identity a day after the incident on 14 May. He said she had only become aware of Mr Strauss-Kahn's identity "a day later when a friend called her to tell her, 'do you have any idea who this man is who did this to you?'". Mr Shapiro said his client was "scared and incredulous". Nike sb shoes "When she found out this encounter was with a man of great power and wealth she feared not only for herself but more importantly for her daughter." The woman had now been reunited with her 15-year-old daughter in a "safe place", he added. Mr Shapiro said she had tried to return to her home - a sub-let flat in the Bronx - but had found about 30 people waiting outside. He said: "She has been in a whirlwind since this has taken place... She has not had a moment of peace, has not been able to return home or seek help. "She doesn't know what her future will bring." chea p coach handbags outlet Carpet examined Mr Strauss-Kahn's lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, said on Monday that the defence believes the forensic evidence "will not be consistent with a forcible encounter". However, Mr Shapiro said there was "nothing consensual about what took place in that hotel room" in New York. Police have removed a piece of carpet from the Sofitel hotel, in search of evidence to support the maid's allegation she was forced into an act of oral sex. Mr Shapiro told NBC television that his client was expected to testify before a grand jury later on Wednesday. nike dunk shoes The maid, from the West African nation of Guinea, told police that when she entered the hotel room, Mr Strauss-Kahn came out of the bathroom naked, chased her down and sexually assaulted her before she broke free and fled. Mr Strauss-Kahn, one of France's most high-profile politicians, has been seen as a front-runner in next year's presidential elections. His arrest has shocked France. His wife, former French TV interviewer Anne Sinclair, is thought to be visiting him in the next two days.coac h handbags outlet Public opinion in France appears still to be backing Mr Strauss-Kahn, with polls suggesting many people believe he was the victim of a conspiracy - an accusation strongly denied by the accuser's lawyer, Mr Shapiro.

Sony offers Playstation Network apology package

2011-May-17, 09:42

Sony has begun offering Playstation Network gamers incentives to return to the system following its major hack attack. coac h outlet The compensation package includes a selection of free games and additional days of premium content. The plans also include a 12-month free identity protection programme. The protection will be available for Playstation gamers in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. It will offer victim of fraud support, a dedicated helpline and insurance covering expenses incurred in identity restoration. Cheap Women Nike Dunk SB Low In a press release, Sony said it will "investigate the possibility of similar programmes" in other countries. However, senior PR manager for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) Jonathan Fargher told the BBC it represents a good offer. repl ica coach outlet "Clearly there's going to be a minority of people out there who have some of those games. "We certainly believe the welcome back programme and the choice of games that we're offering, for free, is good value." He added that it is the first step in regaining the trust of Playstation users, with more plans being announced soon. "You will be able to access this content once PlayStation Store comes back online and we are doing everything we can to make that happen as soon as possible." In addition to the free games, users were also offered 30 days free Playstation Plus membership which offers premium content not available to free users. coac h factory outlet Existing Playstation Plus subscribers will receive 60 days free. Users on the Sony Online Entertainment network - another affected by the hack - will receive their own package of 45 days of game time as well as in-game currency. "I own all of the five games I can choose from and have finished most of them," commented user Arkeologen in response to the announcement. Oli Walsh, from Eurogamer.net, believes the compensation package is "fairly generous" given that the Playstation Network is a largely free service. repl ica coach handbags "They are old games, but they're all good games. The risk is that if you're a real passionate fan you've probably played them already," he said. "I think it was a very difficult one for them to get right. Judge detains man accused of beheading UK woman

2011-May-15, 09:49

A Bulgarian man accused of stabbing and beheading a UK woman in a shop on Tenerife has been detained in prison. Coach Leather Handbags Deyan Valentinov Deyanov, 28, was ordered to jail by a judge on Sunday following his arrest on suspicion of killing Jennifer Mills-Westley, 60. A note issued by the court said he should have no possibility of bail. Mrs Mills-Westley, originally from Norfolk, had sought help minutes before the attack in Los Cristianos on Friday, according to media reports. The Sunday Times said she told staff in an employment centre she was being followed and security guards told a man to go away. Saab-owner Spyker loses vital Chinese funding

2011-May-12, 08:49

Saab-owner Spyker has announced that its funding deal with China's Hawtai Motor Group has fallen through, throwing its plans to resume production at the Swedish carmaker into doubt. Coach Kristin Handbags Spyker said the agreement had been terminated because Hawtai had been unable to secure shareholder approval. The deal was unveiled just last week, with Hawtai pledging to invest 150m euros ($221m; £134m) into Spyker. Spyker said it would continue work to secure short and medium-term funding. It added in its statement that it would continue discussions with Hawtai, but would now talk to other potential Chinese partners as well. coac h factory outlet Loan talks Concerns are growing for the future of the staff who work at Saab's Trollhaettan factory. But Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeld said the government would not step in to rescue Saab. "It is the owners and the management of Saab that must take this forward and find long-term financing," the AFP news agency quoted him as saying. "We in the government have done all we could to facilitate the process," Mr Reinfeld said. Women Nike Dunk SB High In exchange for its investment of 150m euros, Hawtai was to take a 30% stake in Spyker and it had also reached an agreement on sharing manufacturing and technology. Aids vaccine effective in monkeys, say researchers

2011-May-11, 10:04

A new vaccine can protect macaques against the monkey equivalent of HIV and could provide a fresh approach to an HIV vaccine, a study suggests. coac h outlet US researchers say the vaccine offered protection to 13 of 24 rhesus macaques treated in the experiment. In 12 of the monkeys, the vaccine was still effective 12 months later. They claim the work, published in the journal Nature, could "significantly contribute" to the development of an effective HIV/Aids vaccine. The researchers gave 24 healthy rhesus macaques a vaccine containing a genetically modified form of the virus, rhesus cytomegalovirus (CMV). nike dunk shoes The vaccine was engineered to produce antigens to attack simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), the monkey equivalent of HIV. It was shown to offer complete control against SIV within 13 of the monkeys, with half the monkeys still protected a year on. The vaccine worked by stimulating the production of a particular type of blood cell, called "effector memory T-cells" which can remain vigilant in the body long after an infection has abated, providing long-term protection. Lead author Professor Louis J Picker, of the Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute in Oregon, compares these cells to armed soldiers at the ready. coac h handbags outlet "There are soldiers that are back at the base with their rifles in the shed, and then you have the guys out in the field," he told the BBC. There was also evidence, he said, that the vaccine all but eradicated traces of SIV in the monkeys, something which he said was "unprecedented" in HIV vaccine research. Safety concerns Researchers in the field welcomed the research, but said safety issues would need to be addressed before similar approaches could be tried in humans. "I'm excited by the science because it really does demonstrate that it may be possible to eradicate the HIV virus by a strong immune response," said Professor Sir Andrew McMichael of Oxford University. cheap nike shoes store "But at the same time I'm scratching my head how to take this approach into humans." Professor McMichael said HIV arose from a type of SIV found in chimpanzees, so the animal model used in the study was a good one. The problem, he said, was the potential safety and regulatory issues with introducing CMV into humans, even though many of us already carry the virus. "CMV is not totally benign, it does cause a number of diseases. If you're giving people something you're not going to be able to get rid of should it cause problems, then that's quite a difficult risk to manage." Professor Robin Shattock of Imperial College, London, agreed safety would be key. repl ica coach outlet "The breakthrough here is in using a viral-delivered vaccine that persists - essentially using an engineered virus to thwart a pathogenic virus. The tricky part will be showing it is safe and effective in humans." Professor Picker responded by saying such issues would be addressed in forthcoming work, pointing out that early forms of the smallpox vaccine also carried health risks to humans. "On one level 99% of people in sub-Saharan Africa are CMV-positive and half the people in the developed world are, so we know at lot about it and it's mostly non-pathogenic, except in vulnerable populations like pregnant women," he said. repl ica coach handbags Then last year, a study in the New England Journal of Medicine suggested a drug used to treat HIV-positive patients may offer gay and bisexual men some protection against contracting the virus. Trials of the combination drug Truvada among nearly 2,500 men suggested it could reduce the chances of male-to-male HIV infection by 44%. But major breakthroughs remain hard to come by. Indeed, the new Nature study comes as a separate paper in The Lancet Infectious Diseases reports on the failure of an HIV vaccine trial in South Africa. The MRKAd5 HIV-1 vaccine was trialled in a study involving 801 patients, and no evidence was found that the vaccine was effective. Coach Boots However, the report authors concede that the study's conclusions may have been compromised by a premature end to the trial.

Max Mosley loses European court privacy law bid

2011-May-10, 09:59

Ex-motorsports boss Max Mosley has lost his European Court of Human Rights bid to force newspapers to warn people before exposing their private lives. coac h outlet He said the Strasbourg verdict was "disappointing" but he may appeal, to keep fighting for tighter privacy laws. In 2008, the UK High Court awarded him £60,000 damages after ruling the News of the World invaded his right to privacy by reporting on his sex life. Victory might have led to new privacy laws, which press bosses oppose. Mr Mosley, 71, said of the judgement: "[I'm] obviously disappointed, but it's satisfying that they've been extremely critical of the News of the World. Cheap Women Nike Dunk Low "I think they've underestimated the danger from the UK tabloids but obviously they're the judges and one has to respect their decision." Super-injunctions Mr Mosley won his 2008 High Court battle after a judge ruled there was no justification for the News of the World's front-page article about him paying five women to take part in a sado-masochistic orgy. The tabloid reported that the orgy involving Mr Mosley, the son of fascist leader Oswald Mosley, had Nazi overtones, but this was rejected by the judge. Coach Heels&Sandals Although he was awarded £60,000 damages, everyone had learned the details of his sexual preferences, and he argued money alone could not restore his reputation. He said once a story had been published, you could not "un-publish" it, and the damage had been done. The former president of the International Automobile Federation took his case to the Human Rights Court, challenging UK laws which allow publication without giving targets advanced warning. He said he had not been made aware of the paper's intention to publish, so never had the chance to apply for an injunction to stop the story. Coach Belts And they said newspapers and reporters already sufficiently understood when publication could infringe the right to respect for private life. The chairman of the Press Complaints Commission, Lady Buscombe, said it would be a "diminution of our democracy, never mind our freedom of expression" if injunctions could be gained every time somebody sought to block a story. A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said: "We are pleased with the judgement in this case and believe the court has made the right decision. Afghan forces not ready for security role, Oxfam warns

Bin Laden: US now in control of al-Qaeda image

2011-May-8, 11:12

An old, frail-looking man sits slouched on a floor, a television remote control in his hand. chea p coach handbags outlet No audio, no context and no explanation has been provided for the choice of clips that the Pentagon decided to release, nor was there any other information about whether or not they have any further footage. Tarnished image But, by showing a frail and weak Bin Laden, the US is undoubtedly trying to tarnish the image of the al-Qaeda leader in the eyes of his supporters around the world. The five clips released by Pentagon on Saturday prove more that it possesses such material, rather than that it is a source of new information. Nike outlet They show a more familiar Osama Bin Laden sitting against a plain background, speaking straight into the camera, his face lively and animated. It is the same man who often issued video statements both to his enemies and supporters, although in three of the video clips he is rehearsing rather than delivering the actual speeches. Command and control The clips offer no major revelations, but the US government says that other data in their hands proves that, until the day he died, Bin Laden was in charge of al-Qaeda operations and that his compound in Abbottabad was a control-and-command centre for the organisation. coac h handbags outlet The Pentagon says that "the largest collection of terrorist material ever" also reveals what US counter-terrorism officials have been trying to establish for years - the role that Osama Bin Laden played in the operations of regional affiliates of his organisation, such as the Yemen-based al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Having for years assumed that the organisation operated for the most part independently, Pentagon officials now say that Bin Laden did play a significant role in its activities. If true, his death could be a big blow to a group which sent the so-called "underpants bomber" to blow up a plane over Detroit, and which Washington views as the biggest threat to its homeland security. repl ica coach outlet The US drone strike infuriated hundreds of thousands of demonstrators in Yemen, who have been calling for the resignation of Washington's ally in its war on terror - President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Protesters there accuse Mr Saleh of allowing the attack in exchange for support that he desperately needs.

Osama Bin Laden's killing in Pakistan lawful, says US

2011-May-5, 08:57

Nike outlet The US attorney general has said al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was a lawful military target whose killing was "an act of national self-defence". Eric Holder told a Senate committee that Bin Laden had made no attempt to surrender. The US has acknowledged that Bin Laden was unarmed when shot dead in Monday's raid by US special forces in Pakistan. Meanwhile, the White House has decided not to release photos of the dead Bin Laden. Two couriers and one woman also died in Monday's assault, while one of Bin Laden's wives was injured. Coach Necklaces "If he had surrendered, attempted to surrender, I think we should obviously have accepted that, but there was no indication that he wanted to do that and therefore his killing was appropriate," Mr Holder told the Senate Judiciary Committee. Critics have raised concerns about the legality of the operation. Sightseers Washington has revised its account after initially saying Bin Laden was shot while taking part in a firefight as US Navy Seals stormed the compound. Man Utd 4 - 1 Schalke 04 (agg 6 - 1)

2011-May-4, 08:53

chea p coach handbags outlet And, even though Jose Manuel Jurado pulled a goal back for the visitors before the interval, it was never more than a minor interruption to a night of Old Trafford celebration. Brazilian midfielder Anderson underlined United's domination of Schalke by scoring twice late on as a weakened line-up still proved all too much for the Champions League's surprise package this season. Now Ferguson must turn his attention to claiming United's record 19th domestic title - but also devising a plan to ensure the torture his team suffered on what he called Barcelona's passing "carousel" is not repeated at Wembley on 28 May. coac h handbags outlet He was the creator with an inviting pass that set Valencia free on the angle of the penalty area. The winger then showed great composure to beat the advancing Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and lift what had been a subdued atmosphere inside Old Trafford, the lack of tension reflected in the mood of the crowd. Gibson turned from creator to goalscorer five minutes later to double United's lead on the night and end any serious doubts about them reaching Wembley. It was nightmare moment for Neuer, peerless in keeping United at bay almost single-handedly eight days ago. Gibson's shot carried power but was directed straight at the keeper, who somehow allowed the strike to fumble through his grasp and into the net. Schalke at least responded with a measure of spirit and pulled a goal back after 35 minutes when Jurado took advantage of space and time inside the area to fire high past United keeper Edwin van der Sar at the Stretford End. Nike outlet It was the signal for the outbreak of ugly scenes among the visiting supporters, who clashed with stewards high behind one goal, with flares set alight and bottles thrown, but fortunately order was swifly restored. The Red Devils had mixed moments of defensive uncertainty with attacking threat, assisted by an uncharacteristically uncertain performance from Germany's much-coveted keeper Neuer, who was out of sorts virtually from the start. He redeemed himself with a fine stretching save from Anderson early in the second half, but the midfield man won their next personal battle as United sealed the victory and ensured the party could start inside Old Trafford. North Korean political prison camps growing - Amnesty

2011-May-3, 09:44

Nike Dunk SB Low The North Korean government - which has denied the existence of mass political prison camps - has not publicly commented on the report's findings. 'Eating rats' The new images show four of the six camps occupying huge areas of land in vast wilderness sites in the provinces of South Pyongan, South Hamkyung and North Hamkyung, Amnesty says. A comparison of the latest pictures with satellite imagery from 2001 indicates "a significant increase in the scale of the camps", it adds. Nike Dunk SB Mid The former prisoners at one camp at Yodok said they were forced to work in conditions approaching slavery and were frequently subjected to torture and inhumane treatment. Kim, a former prisoner in Kwanliso 15 at Yodok, says: "Everyone in Kwanliso witnessed executions. All those who tried to escape were caught. They were interrogated for two to three months and then executed." Amnesty also says it has been told of several accounts of people in the camps eating rats or picking corn kernels out of animal waste purely to survive amid severe food shortages.

Last cigarette... airport charges smokers for that last minute drag

2011-May-2, 11:16

Nike outlet A final cigarette before that flight? It comes with a price tag at Belfast International Airport. Smoking is a real drag at the airport where smokers must pay £1 to smoke a cigarette in a designated area. It is thought to be the first airport in the UK to introduce such a charge. Smokers are asked to put a coin into a machine which opens doors to a special smoking area. It already costs £1 to drop travellers at the airport. There is another £1 fee for a pack of plastic bags to get through security. Entrance to the special smoking area costs £1 Cheap Nike Dunk SB Low Philip, a non smoker, said Mark's face "lit up" when he thought he could smoke before their flight. "'We've got an hour and I'm going for a smoke' he said. But he stormed back and said: 'I'm not going for a smoke, you have to pay.'" Travel writer Geoff Hill said imposing such fees seemed like "death by 1,000 small cuts". "I get the feeling that people are going back to airlines where the travelling is part of the enjoyment of going away on holiday," he said. Nike sb shoes In a statement, the airport said: "We recognised that there was a demand for a smoking facility from some customers, given that all public places (including airports) are now, and have been for a number of years, non-smoking. "We are responding to that demand. "However providing a specialist facility for a relatively small number of users is expensive to build and to maintain, so it is not unreasonable that a small charge should be levied for the use of the facility."

Ex-President Jimmy Carter calls for North Korea aid

2011-Apr-28, 10:45

Former US President Jimmy Carter has accused the US and South Korea of human rights violations against North Koreans by withholding food aid. Women Nike Dunk High Food fears Mr Carter travelled to North Korea with three former national leaders from The Elders group and held talks with Kim Jong-il's deputy, Kim Jong-nam. Speaking in Seoul after his return, he said North Korea needed food aid. "One of the most important human rights is to have food to eat, and for South Korea and the US and others to deliberately withhold food aid to the North Korean people is really a human rights violation," he said. South Korea and the US have both suspended food shipments to the North in the past few years as a result of worsening political relations and concerns over monitoring the aid. Women Nike Dunk Low But, says the BBC's Lucy Williamson in Seoul, North Korea has been warning of especially severe food shortages this year as a result of the harsh winter. North Korea has been dependent on food aid since famine in the mid-1990s. On Wednesday Samaritan's Purse, a US-based charity that surveyed food needs in North Korea in February, warned that food stocks in some parts of the country would run out by June. On dialogue, Mr Carter said that although he did not meet Kim Jong-il, the North Korean leader "sent word that he and the people of North Korea are willing to negotiate with South Korea or the United States... on any subject at any time without preconditions". Nike outlet The former president last year secured the release of another US citizen jailed in the country, but said before he left that he did not expect to raise the case of Mr Jun on this occasion.
